Robotics

This Saturday the robotics team members and I attended the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) kickoff and it was very interesting. Inventor and FIRST creator Dean Kamen gave a rousing and emotional speech on the importance of engineering in education, the head of NASA's robotics division spoke and pop star Will.i.am tried to inject some "cool" into the proceedings. Then this year's game was introduced and can be seen here:

Now the build season has officially begun and the students will spend the next six weeks tirelessly designing, building and programming the robot almost every day. The robot must be built by 2/16 and the NY regional competition at the Jacob Javitts Center is from March 11th to 13th. Come by if you can to root them on!

The 7th and 8th graders in the FIRST Lego League (a completely separate competition) are nearing the end of their season, with their medically themed robot programmed and projects on nanotechnology and robotic surgery almost done. Their qualifier will be at City College this Sunday, 1/16. If anyone lives nearby please come and root them on!

Civis Femina Bake Sale TOMORROW

Civis Femina is having its first bakesale tomorrow. The money from this fundraiser is going towards supporting one or two girls intensively, by for example, helping with their tuition and their living expenses, etc. Civis Femina. Civis Femina seeks to empower women and girls in their young ages to step up and use the power of their education to bring changes to the lives of other women and girls around the world that are underprivileged. Come and support our first fundraiser of the year in the Foyer, all through lunch.

Class of 2013 - Grade Sweatshirt Sales

The class of 2013 Term Council is now accepting payments to purchase a "You're Swell" grade sweatshirt! Each sweatshirts cost $25, and can be purchased by writing a check addressed to Hunter College High School. Term Council members will be outside the Social Studies Annex with a signup sheet. Members will be there during homeroom, activities period, 5th period, and 9th period to accept checks and allow you to choose a name for the back of your sweatshirt and select a size. This is an easy and very rewarding job.

Requirements:

- support and advocate for our library

- maintain open communication with Librarian, Eugene Lim

- convene 2 or 3 meetings a year (via email) and meet in the HCHS Library

- co-write (with Mr. Lim) an occasional letter (to college or alums)

- submit 1 or 2 articles in Hilites to keep parents informed

- attend PTA meetings

- other tasks as needed

As outgoing Chair, I will train you and advise you. Currently there are 12 members on the committee. Chances are that one of the many 7th grade parents on the committee might step up as co-chair.

MARINE club presents “I can’t believe it’s alive!”

When and Where: Wednesday, December 15, 2010 in Room 407 (4^th floor lab) during Activities Period

All students are welcome to come and see live blood circulation in a goldfish’s tail under the microscope! Students in grades 7-12 from MARINE club will be showing a demo of live capillary motion on a projection board, where you will be able to actually see blood cells moving. We’ll also be having a discussion addressing questions including: “How is the circulatory system in fish similar to ours? How is it different? Why we should even care?” Are you curious now? What is necessary is that you want to put your organizational skills and talent to work helping your kid’s school raise much needed funds.

This Monday (12/6), Clair Buffie, more commonly known as Miss New York, is coming to Hunter! She will be speaking in the auditorium during the afternoon (5th-8th periods). Ms. Buffie is one of the few, if not the only, pageant candidates to focus on the issue of LGBT equality in her campaign platform: "The issues of gay rights make up the civil rights movement of our generation and reach far beyond marriage equality. This will be a year of change in New York State and Claire is ready to support this incredible movement."

G.O. Spelling Bee

Seventh and eighth graders are highly encouraged to sign up for the Spelling Bee, which will be taking place on Dec 3 (Friday) at 3:30 PM in the auditorium. The sign up sheet is located just outside the G.O. Office on the second floor across from the auditorium. The winner of the spelling bee has the opportunity of advancing to the New York State Spelling Bee. We hope to see you there! The Desk

Girls Lacrosse

Girls Lacrosse (coached by Ms. Bowler) will be offering some off-season early morning clinics in the gym on Thursdays from 7:15-8am. These clinics are OPEN TO EVERYONE, including middle schoolers and new players, so please, SPREAD THE WORD! THE FIRST CLINIC WILL MEET THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2ND and is INTENDED FOR FIRST TIME PLAYERS/MEMBERS. This is a great opportunity to learn lacrosse, or to touch up on your skills!!

The library is happy to announce a new resource for students and faculty:

Through a generous parent donation, LearningExpress Library is now available for the Hunter community. This electronic resource offers practice tests, exercises, and tutorials in a variety of subjects. Under its "College Preparation" menu, it has several different practice AP, SAT, and PSAT practice tests. It also has math and grammar lessons as well as tutorials in various MS and Adobe software, e.g. Excel, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

Hunter 4H urban pathways drive:

What is it? It's a necessities drive for homeless that include donating toothbrushes, toilet papers, clothing etc. The drive will run until Dec 15th or 17th, when we'll collect our necessities and give it to the urban pathways committee, in which they will make gift baskets worth $25 each and donate it to the homeless. Collection boxes will be in the first floor main entrance and also the community service office. We are also accepting monetary donations, if the recipient could email Hunter4H@gmail.com and organize a time and place to collect the money (we will buy necessities with the collected money).

The Fall Annual Fund Drive kicked off this week! The Annual Fund is the primary fund raising project for the PTA. Those families who have not yet contributed this year should have received a packet in the mail highlighting the importance of this initiative. The suggested contribution is $1000 per child, but any amount is welcome. We encourage 100% participation! Submit before the end of the year to get your tax deduction. For writing, Knights and Ladies are encouraged to produce the best fairy tale with a twist (example: who was Little Red Riding Hood really going to see that day?). For art, feel free to email 8.5 by 11 inches of whatever you wish, full color—there’s no theme to the contest. Youth Philanthropy Worldwide (YPW) Thanksgiving Luncheon

On Wed, Nov 10, the PTA is organizing a meeting to discuss and share information relating to how Hunter students use the internet (for academics, social activities, communication and entertainment). We are looking for at least 6-8 student volunteers (grades 8-12) to demonstrate and share their views on how and where they and their peers navigate on the internet (Blackboard, Facebook, Skype are possibilites), and also to review what capabilities best serve their needs (ie., smartphones and their alternatives). Student volunteers would be asked to join a couple of parents for a preparatory meeting from 6-7 and then attend the PTA meeting from 7-8. A number of outside speakers are also being invited to follow on the students' discussion. If you're interested, please respond to June Yuson (jyusonho@hotmail.com).

The Hunter Model United Nations Society will host Monica Smith USAID Regional Director for Europe and Eurasia now based in Budapest. Ms. Smith has lived and worked in Jordan, Egypt, and India and will speak about her work and will answer questions about the US Foreign Service. All students are welcome.

On Monday, November 1, Monica Smith, Hunter alumna and regional legal advisor for the United States Agency for International Development, will be speaking to students during activities, 11:15-11:50. On Tuesday, November 9, Professor Jean-Marc Oppenheim from Columbia University will talk about the prospects for the current mid-East peace talks. This will also be held from 11:15-11:50 in room 322. It is open to all students and faculty.

About the Seventh Grade Counselor:
Lee Weinberg is in her 19th year as a counselor at HCHS. She has worked with students at all grade levels, and has extensive experience in personal, academic and college counseling. Currently, Ms. Weinberg is specializing in work with our middle school students. This year she is working with our seventh grade students, and she will follow them through the end of eighth grade. Ms. Weinberg is available for counseling regarding your children’s academic, personal, and social issues. She is also available for crisis intervention, consultations with parents and families, and to make referrals to appropriate resources when necessary. Hunter Quiz Bowl is recruiting!

The HCHS Quiz Bowl team is looking for new members from all grades. If you are a trivia fan of any stripe, Quiz Bowl has a lot to offer. We compete against other high schools in academic challenge tournaments involving general knowledge, science, art, music, literature, history, mathematics, and popular culture. We practice four days a week in room 416, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:30-5pm, and Wednesday during Activities.

CYF Seekers: Operation Christmas Child

CYF Seekers, Hunter's Christian club, is collecting shoeboxes filled with toys and supplies to send to children in Africa. Julie Fried: School Counseling Intern, 441A on Fridays

Julie holds a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University, and is currently in a post Masters, Advanced Certification Program in School Counseling at NYU. She has worked with a diverse set of children, adolescents, and families, and is very excited to be at HCHS. She is most looking forward to supporting students during a critical point of development, full of challenging academic and personal experiences.

Alison Ferst: 441A on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

MA, M.Phil, Ph.D candidate (Clinical Psychology). Alison was the first CUNY Clinical Psychology Fellow placed at HCCS. Following her two year term she has continued to serve the community as the Clinical Psychology and Substance Abuse consultant, bringing a range of skills and expertise, including an extensive background in community mental health (working at GMHC for over 11 years coordinating the Child Life Program for families affected by HIV and AIDS), and Substance Abuse to the HCCS community. Alison has taught Treatment of Substance Abuse in the CASAC program at City College and is trained in Evidence Based Treatment of Substance Abuse. Alison provides consultation services including the development and implementation of substance use prevention, and education programming including workshops and groups for students across grades (7-12) on substance abuse issues; outreach, education and support for

HCCS parents via PTA activities and individual family consultations.

Hui-Mei Nan, M.D. and Ph.D. candidate

441A on Thursdays, periods 1-4

Hui-Mei Nan, is a trained medical doctor and is currently a graduate student of the clinical psychology program at Adelphi University. In contrast to her psychiatric training in Taiwan, New York provides diverse cultural experiences in her clinical work. Dr. Nan’s transition from Asia to the US helps her to be more mindful about how we are impacted by different values and expectations shaped in cultures. She enjoys meeting people, listening to their stories, and offering her perspectives. Dr. Nan also speaks Mandarin, if this is the language people are more comfortable with they should feel free to connect with her via their child’s counselor. She forward meeting students and families at HCHS this year!

Avary Lin-Ye, School Counseling Intern

441A on Fridays

Avary holds a B.A, in Psychology from Barnard College, Columbia University and is currently working on my M.S.Ed in School Counseling and Mental Health at the University of Pennsylvania. She is employed as a tutor and curriculum coordinator at Honors Review Learning Center and as a freelance Chinese-English interpreter. Her interests in the biological sciences had led to several years of laboratory research at Columbia University Medical Center's Department of Pathology and Washington University Medical Center's Department of Otolaryngology, at which she still consults on current projects and manuscripts for publication. She is also active in her volunteer work with New York Cares, aiding second-language acquisition in immigrant populations and promoting self-expression through arts and sports with children and adolescents. She looks forward to working with the student population at Hunter College High School and to fully acquainting herself with the daily operations of the high school education system.

Keri Marcovici, Clinical Psychology Fellow

441A on Mondays and Wednesdays

Keri returns to HCHS for a second year in the role of a CUNY psychology fellow. Prior to undertaking doctoral work in clinical psychology, Keri worked on the Gulf Coast, managing an emergency, school-based, psychosocial, program for hurricane-affected children. She has her BA from Oberlin College, an MPH from Columbia University and is a Chancellor Fellow at the CUNY Clinical Psychology Program.

Action for Energy Awareness
First we would like to thank those who visited the AEA booth and participated in the Energy Trivia Contest at the Club Open House. We had three winners: Russell Bingham (7), Eric Siu (11), and Alard Ng (11) and they will receive their prize at our next meeting on Thursday 10/21 during activities in Room 416. Hunter 4H Club
It seems like many people know what 4H is, but because we are in NYC, we focus less on agriculture and more on community service, public speaking, healthy living, citizenship, leadership and science. We have a giant schedule prepared from National 4H and our local director which includes service projects, science oriented workshops, and even trips. There is MANDATORY public speaking involved, but it's very easy and it'll definitely hone and improve people's public speaking skills. Our club meets Thursdays in Room 306 during activities. Sophomores and Juniors: PSAT Administration
Hunter College High School will administer the PSAT this Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 8 AM SHARP!! Another really helpful tool when considering applying for financial aid, is the Tuition Coach module on Naviance. This can be found under the Colleges Tab towards the bottom of the page. Korea Society Project Bridge
Project Bridge is a yearlong program for juniors and seniors. The program includes regular meetings and concludes with a subsidized 10-day study tour to Korea in April. Students study Korean language, history, and culture, as well as the 1992 riots in Los Angeles-known in Korean as Sa-I-Gu. “The objective of these activities is to help the participants gain insight into Korea, learn leadership skills and develop intercultural understanding.” The study tour includes visits to historical sites and a home stay with a family. The Global Orphan Project transforms lives by caring for more than 3,500 orphaned and abandoned children in fourteen of the most desperate countries in the world. The GO Project uses a unique, community-based model, partnering with local leaders to provide children with a caretaker, a safe place to live, two-meals a day, an education, and access to medical care. Healthy Hunter/Wellness in the Schools Guest Chef Day Wednesday, June 9
A volunteer and graduate from the French Culinary Institute will create a delicious lunch on Wednesday in the cafeteria.
On the menu: Latin Chicken, Black Bean Salad, Festival Greens (collards with garlic), Baked Plantains, Salad Bar, Fresh Fruit, and Milk.
Intern Ellen Emerson will be our Guest Chef of the day. She ransitioned to the culinary field after a 22 year career in the US Navy, having achieved the rank of Commander. Her last assignment was commanding the Military Entrance Processing Station for New York City, at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. A graduate of the Natural Gourmet Institute for Culinary Arts, she is now very involved in Wellness in the Schools, as well as several other non-profits helping kids learn about the importance of nutrition and the joys of eating healthfully.

Thursday is a Half Day (1-4) for Carnival. There are a lot of great club events happening this week, including the premier of Peer Leadership's Stress Documentary. Brick Prison Playhouse kicks off on Thursday after Carnival and continues through Saturday.

Peer Leadership's Stress Documentary Premier
Auditorium, June 2nd, Entire Day
Peer Leadership is a club containing students from grades 9-12 who discuss and act on ways to improve the Hunter community. June 2nd is the premier of our stress documentary project. The spirit for this project was triggered by our perception of an extraordinarily high-pressure atmosphere at Hunter, a feeling that was later solidified by the striking results in the stress portion of the Middle States Survey results. We have interviewed many students and have received a lot of feedback on how much stress they have to face daily. We believe this film honestly portrays the average Hunter student's life, including their workload and extracurriculars. This message is a shout-out to all Hunter teachers, students, and faculty to visit the auditorium on that day and view the movie at least once, and encourage members of the Hunter community around you to do the same!

Playback is Hunter's premiere arts and music publication. We are looking for new writers for next year. Elementary School Carnival Needs High School Volunteers
The HCES PTA is seeking volunteers to help with the HCES Spring Carnival on Saturday, June 5th at shifts between the hours of 7:30 am - 5:30 pm. Community Service hours will be provided. Responsibilities can include: setting up book and rummage sale area, including moving books and rummage materials from indoor storage to outdoor venue; staffing book and rummage sales; supervising children on rides; breaking down book and rummage sales, including moving books and rummage materials from outdoor venue to indoor storage; errands for carnival chair and coordinators; other tasks as needed. American Sign Language - Call for Board Members: Interest Meeting 2!

If you couldn't make it to last Monday's interest meeting, there will be another one this coming Monday. American Sign Language is looking for students genuinely interested in ASL and other forms of non-verbal communication (braille, Morse code, cryptology, etc.). Board positions will need to be filled next year after the seniors graduate. At the interest meeting, we'll be discussing what the ASL board does and how to join. Tapestry Welcomes Guest Speaker, Rose Fox
On Monday, May 24th, we will be welcoming Rose Fox, an editor at Publishers Weekly, a former Hunter alumna (class of 1996), and a past member of Tapestry. We will have a question-and-answer period afterwards; expect professional tips on writing!. She's a totally awesome and lax person, and she will be bringing some novels to hand out (for free)--some of them already published and some of them not. We will also be distributing issues of Tapestry for free to all contributors, so if you wrote or drew something for us, don't hesitate to come! Science Club Welcomes Hana Lee
Hana Lee is a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology at University of California at Berkeley and a member of Dr. Rachel Brem's research group, studying population genomics and gene regulation in yeast. She graduated from Hunter College High School in 2003 and received her A.B. cum laude with High Honors in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College in 2007. Action for Energy Awareness: Introductory Meeting
The first meeting of Action for Energy Awareness will be held on June 1 during Activities period in Room 404. Global History for Haiti—10 for $10 - A letter from Ms. Stolarsky's Global Class
The Global Orphan Project transforms lives by caring for more than 3,500 orphaned and abandoned children in fourteen of the most desperate countries in the world. The GO Project uses a unique, community-based model, partnering with local leaders to provide children with a house “momma,” or caregiver, a safe place to live, two meals a day, an education, and access to medical care. GO also recognizes economic development as a way to reduce the number of orphans in the world. They help launch local businesses that provide jobs and training. Finally, due to a few donors that cover overhead costs, 10t0% of your donation will go directly to provide care for the children.

The Coalition for Asian American Children and Families (CACF) is now accepting applications for the ASIAN AMERICAN STUDENT ADVOCACY PROJECT (ASAP). Please encourage Asian Pacific American public high school students to apply!
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: ASAP is a leadership program for Asian Pacific American (APA) public high school students who want to learn how to make positive changes in their community. ASAP student leaders identify issues and challenges facing APA youth and build campaigns around the identified issues. Past ASAP youth have advocated for: additional resources for English Language Learners, safe schools free of harassment and bullying, the mental health needs of APA high school students, and ensuring high school curriculum is inclusive of APA history.
ELIGIBILITY: New York City public high school students enrolled in Fall 2010 as freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply.
APPLICATION PROCESS: Completed applications, including a personal statement, letter of recommendation and parent consent, are due Monday, June 7th, 2010. Students will receive a certificate of completion, letter of recommendation and $250 stipend upon completion of the program.

Healthy Hunter/Wellness in the Schools
Guest Chef Day Wednesday, May 26
A volunteer and graduate from the French Culinary Institute will create a delicious lunch on Wednesday in the cafeteria. On the menu:

Intern Lori Weisenberg-Catalano will be our Guest Chef of the day. She has been volunteering at Hunter since September. A vegetarian since 1977, she is a cooking resource to family and friends and has taught vegetarian cooking classes to teenagers and adults. An avid baker, Lori has donated baked goods for fundraisers at various organizations including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Manhattan School of Music Precollege, Roslyn Trinity Cooperative, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Lori appreciates the opportunity to work with Wellness in the Schools to create a healthier lunch program for the students at Hunter.

Congratulations Elena Kagan, class of ’77! Elena Kagan, alumna of the Hunter College Elementary School and the Hunter College High School, has been nominated to serve on the United States Supreme Court by President Barack Obama. The entire school community joins in congratulating Ms. Kagan and her family. Ms. Kagan’s mother Gloria was a beloved teacher in the Elementary School; her brother, Irving, is an esteemed member of our Social Studies Department (also graduated from Hunter College HS class of 83); and her niece Rachel graduated from our school in 2005.

Reshma for Congress Summer Internship Opportunities
The candidate is Reshma Saujani (www.reshma2010.com). She is attempting to become the first South Asian woman ever elected to the US Congress. She's the daughter of political refugees from Uganda and she’s decided to run for Congress to make sure New Yorkers have the same opportunities that she’s had.
We are hoping to help young, motivated individuals with a strong interest in politics get valuable experience through a position with our campaign. We have a variety of available internship opportunities. Summer Intensive Chinese Language Program

Global History for Haiti—10 for $10 - A letter from Ms. Stolarsky's Global Class
The Global Orphan Project transforms lives by caring for more than 3,500 orphaned and abandoned children in fourteen of the most desperate countries in the world. The GO Project uses a unique, community-based model, partnering with local leaders to provide children with a house “momma,” or caregiver, a safe place to live, two meals a day, an education, and access to medical care. GO also recognizes economic development as a way to reduce the number of orphans in the world. They help launch local businesses that provide jobs and training. Finally, due to a few donors that cover overhead costs, 100% of your donation will go directly to provide care for the children. Reshma for Congress Summer Internship Opportunities
The candidate is Reshma Saujani (www.reshma2010.com). She is attempting to become the first South Asian woman ever elected to the US Congress. She's the daughter of political refugees from Uganda and she’s decided to run for Congress to make sure New Yorkers have the same opportunities that she’s had.
We are hoping to help young, motivated individuals with a strong interest in politics get valuable experience through a position with our campaign. Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer
Looking for Hunter students to participate in the 10th annual Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer - The Kids Walk is a 4.5 mile walkathon organized by NYC area students to raise money for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. This year the walk will take place on Saturday, May 8th at 1:30 in Central Park. Many NYC area high schools participate. Although this is an exceptional event created by, organized and run by high school students, last year was the first time Hunter ever participated. Hunter could have a big impact on this event and the lives of children with cancer. Students are organized by school and put together teams of walkers who ask sponsors to make a contribution in any amount for pediatric cancer research. All walkers are welcome – there is no registration process or fee, although a $20 contribution is requested from walkers not getting sponsors. Global History for Haiti—10 for $10

History is about informing people about yesterday in order to change today and tomorrow. Earlier this year, we studied Haiti’s tumultuous past as a French colony of slaves who overcame Napoleon’s army to gain independence. The story of Haiti’s history is incomplete without understanding the roots of Haitian pride, stemming from the fight against tyranny and oppression, not only against the French, but against their own corrupt regimes. While Haiti was strong enough to protect itself from outside attack, the country was not able to handle deterioration from the inside as well. This, coupled with January’s devastating earthquake, leaves Haiti forced to confront both its catastrophic loss and its historical demons. Although the national pride of Haiti will live on forever, the country itself has required help for some time, and we finally have a clear-cut way to give back.

An idea emerged from our discussions. WE, as a class, should help Haiti. Learning about the world as a global ‘whole’, so to speak, has inspired us to care about the world beyond our own and helped us to see that we can make positive change, even as young people. We decided that we want to focus our efforts on providing direct aid to the children of Haiti. Being at a similar stage in our lives, this cause in particular has called out to us. Though clearly we cannot comprehend the trauma and heartbreak that these children have experienced, we have understanding of what it's like to grow up fresh in our minds. We feel all the more related and connected to helping out these children as we learn about the amount of growing up they have had to do in such a short amount of time. To that end, we have launched a project at Hunter through which we plan to raise funds to go directly to the Global Orphan Project.

Amnesty International at Hunter is hosting a letter writing/petition signing event in the courtyard (if it's nice out) on Thursday during activities and 5th periods, where all are welcome to sign petitions and letters of solidarity in response to the recent passing of an anti-homosexuality bill in Uganda. This bill orders the execution of all homosexuals residing in Uganda where they are seen as a risk to the "traditional family".

HCHS Red Cross Club
Purpose: To help victims of disasters!
Where we meet: Room 424 (Across from the counseling department)
What we do: We work with the NYC American Red Cross Chapter to scedule both hands-on and fundraising events to help raise awareness of recent disasters. Recently, the club participated in the preparation and decoration of the very successful Let It Rock concert. Performers such as Jay Legaspi, Ryan Bandong, and AHMIR (all successful YouTube artists) participated as well. We would be so excited if other Hunterites would attend our meetings and share our passion for helping others :)
Why we are different from other clubs: Unlike other clubs (no offense, other clubs), the Hunter Red Cross Club is actually officially afilliated with the American Red Cross. Summer Internship Opportunity for Hunter Students
NYU Medical Center is looking for 2 high school students (age 14 or above) to work as a student intern for 4-6 weeks this summer. Students will have the opportunity to be exposed to laboratory medicine and are able to attend informative seminars. This is a volunteer-based program with no wage; however, meal passes are provided daily. At the end of the internship, each student receives a certificate from NYU Medical Center and a letter documenting the number of hours work for Community Service credit. Raab and the Hunter College Center for Gifted Studies and Education invite you to a poetry reading and reception to mark the publication of long-time Hunter College High School English teacher Kip Zegers' new book, Reading Whitman in Manhattan: Poetry, Teaching, and Hunter College High School. Zegers' book, published this spring by Foothills Publishing, will be available for purchase at the reception. This unusual book combines Zegers' poems on teaching at Hunter, some personal essays on the link between poetry and teaching, and excerpts from Argus, Hunter's literary magazine. Hunter College High School’s Students for Environmental Action (SEA) invites students, parents, faculty, and administrators to participate in our second annual lecture event, Talking Green Talking Green is a Lecture Event about Working Together to Ensure a Healthy Environment for Tomorrow's Generation. Recently, the club participated in the preparation and decoration of the very successful Let It Rock concert. Performers such as Jay Legaspi, Ryan Bandong, and AHMIR (all successful YouTube artists) participated as well. We would be so excited if other Hunterites would attend our meetings and share our passion for helping others :)
Why we are different from other clubs: Unlike other clubs (no offense, other clubs), the Hunter Red Cross Club is actually officially afilliated with the American Red Cross. Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer
Looking for Hunter students to participate in the 10th annual Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer - The Kids Walk is a 4.5 mile walkathon organized by NYC area students to raise money for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. This year the walk will take place on Saturday, May 8th at 1:30 in Central Park. Many NYC area high schools participate. Although this is an exceptional event created by, organized and run by high school students, last year was the first time Hunter ever participated. Hunter could have a big impact on this event and the lives of children with cancer. Students are organized by school and put together teams of walkers who ask sponsors to make a contribution in any amount for pediatric cancer research. All walkers are welcome – there is no registration process or fee, although a $20 contribution is requested from walkers not getting sponsors. New Initiative for Energy Awareness

The theme of the art contest is a futurist universe, or, for a twist, retro-futurism. The prize is a Pearl Paint gift card and, of course, being published on the front cover of Tapestry’s spring issue. Please make sure submissions are 8.5” by 11”, with full color. The theme of the writing contest is exploring punk subculture in literature, such as steampunk, cyberpunk, biopunk, apocapunk, clockpunk, dieselpunk, etc. Winners receive a Barnes and Noble gift card. Green Schools NYC 2010 is a conference and resource fair that is the largest ever city-wide green schools event. At GSNYC2010 about 1,000 students, teachers, parents, non-profit organizations, green business leaders, and others from all over New York will hear speakers, attend workshops, share their own knowledge and ideas, and build the green schools movement. The speakers include actor and environmentalist Matthew Modine. Workshops will include Growing the Movement: media and technology, how parents can contribute, green cleaning, and lowering your carbon footprint. Attending the fair is free.

BoxTops Collection At Hunter!
Do you want to make a difference at Hunter?
Beginning this week, we will be collecting boxtops in the lobby at anytime as part of this pilot boxtops collection program. Boxtops can be found on everyday products like cereal or tissue boxes and are worth 10 cents each to the school! The money raised from boxtops collection will be used towards in-school projects voted upon by the students.

Hunter College High School’s 2010 Geography Bee Winner to Compete at the New York State Level.
Congratulations to Yoni Nachmany, our school-wide champion, for being selected for the New York State Championship of the National Geographic Society’s Geography Bee. Yoni was selected based on his score on a written examination submitted after the school competition this last January. The New York State competition will take place Friday, April 9, 2010, at the New York State Museum in Albany. Good luck Yoni!

Green Schools NYC
Green Schools NYC 2010 is a conference and resource fair that is the largest ever city-wide green schools event. At GSNYC2010 about 1,000 students, teachers, parents, non-profit organizations, green business leaders, and others from all over New York will hear speakers, attend workshops, share their own knowledge and ideas, and build the green schools movement. The speakers include actor and environmentalist Matthew Modine. Workshops will include Growing the Movement: media and technology, how parents can contribute, green cleaning, and lowering your carbon footprint. Attending the fair is free.

Tapestry, Hunter’s only science fiction and fantasy magazine for grades 1-12, is opening its second art and writing contest. The prize is a Pearl Paint gift card and, of course, being published on the front cover of Tapestry’s spring issue. Please make sure submissions are 8.5” by 11”, with full color. The theme of the writing contest is exploring punk subculture in literature, such as steampunk, cyberpunk, biopunk, apocapunk, clockpunk, dieselpunk, etc. Winners receive a Barnes and Noble gift card. Join us in order to help victims of natural disasters! And work with the Red Cross Chapter in Greater New York. We are focused on helping people! Learn how to become a trained youth volunteer by attending the meetings! Specific activities that we do: Going into the chapter and preapring first aid kits, resource bags, etc. to be shipped to countries w/ recent disasters (i.e. Haiti). We are also currently preparing for the Let It Rock Concert on April 2nd (all proceeds go towards the International Relief Fund)

Dr. Philip Jeffery, Chair of the HCHS Science Department will discuss what’s happening in the science department; independent student research, the skills and attitudes needed, and guidelines to apply for these opportunities; national science competitions; and writing, illustration and teaching opportunities.
Then Alison Ferst, Clinical Psychology and Substance Abuse Consultant at HCHS will speak openly about helping students navigate the perils and pressures of life at Hunter, share observations from within the Counseling Department, reveal coping strategies used by students, and give advice on how parents can support their child’s academic success and overall well being.

Farm Fresh Produce on March 23rd!
On Tuesday, March 23, Hunter will kick off a program with the Queens County Farm Museum. Students and faculty are invited to try fresh produce straight from the farm in our very own cafeteria. Lunch will feature BBQ Chicken, Veggie Wrap, Oven Roasted Potatoes, and a special lunch salad, Farm Fresh Mixed Greens with Lemon-Honey Dressing.
Menu items are recreated by our wonderful French Culinary Institute chef, Olivia Bonomi Todorov, who vollunteers weekly in the Hunter kitchen. Olivia was born in Italy and has lived in the United States, Central Africa and South East Asia. On her travels she discovered new spices, exotic fruits and vegetables and has sampled dishes the world over. When she settled in New York City she became a professional chef, graduating from The French Culinary Institute, and has worked in some of the most prestigious kitchens in New York, including Jean-Georges, Acquavit and Abigail Kirsch. Stop by and say hello to Olivia, try her delicious food, and give a word of thanks for the wonderful and generous service she is providing to our school this year.

Hunter Wins Science Bowl!
The New York City Regional National Science Bowl took place on March 6, 2010 at NYU Poly. Our Hunter Delta team won first place in a 80:22 point crushing championship round against Queens Gateway. In earlier competition, Hunter teams proved our weight against our biggest rivals, Brooklyn Tech and Spence School. Our Hunter Epsilon team also took third place, matching our previous record in the 2009 Northeast Regional Science Bowl. Delta team will now advance to Nationals with an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC, sponsored by the US Department of Energy, as one of 32 teams participating during the April 29 to May 4 event.

Congratulations to MATHCOUNTS!
Congratulations to Thomas Dumbach who finished in second place in the New York State MATHCOUNTS Competition on Saturday, March 13. Thomas won an all-expenses paid trip to Orlando May 6-9 where he will be one of four middle school students representing New York in the National MATHCOUNTS Competition.

Congratulations too to Hunter's MATHCOUNTS teams (Thomas Dumbach, Ada Huang, Alberto San Miguel Malaney, Dan Wang, Dean Deng, Natasha Narang, Eric Mei, and Sophia Siu) for raising $380 towards Haiti relief. They raised this money by soliciting donations for each point they scored at the Manhattan Chapter competition last month. Thanks to all the friends, classmates, parents, and teachers who supported them in this effort. As part of a national middle school math team effort, their contribution went to the American Red Cross.

Join us in order to help victims of natural disasters! And work with the Red Cross Chapter in Greater New York. We are focused on helping people! Learn how to become a trained youth volunteer by attending the meetings! Specific activities that we do: Going into the chapter and preapring first aid kits, resource bags, etc. to be shipped to countries w/ recent disasters (i.e. Haiti). We are also currently preparing for the Let It Rock Concert on April 2nd (all proceeds go towards the International Relief Fund)

BoxTops Collection At Hunter!
Do you want to make a difference at Hunter?
Beginning this week, we will be collecting boxtops in the lobby at anytime as part of this pilot boxtops collection program. Boxtops can be found on everyday products like cereal or tissue boxes and are worth 10 cents each to the school! The money raised from boxtops collection will be used towards in-school projects voted upon by the students.

That's right, we are only 10 weeks away from the big Spring Auction! We have been getting some terrific donations: Broadway theater tickets, a Flip video recorder, and fantastic private tours! Then Alison Ferst, Clinical Psychology and Substance Abuse Consultant at HCHS will speak openly about helping students navigate the perils and pressures of life at Hunter, share observations from within the Counseling Department, reveal coping strategies used by students, and give advice on how parents can support their child’s academic success and overall well being.

Welcome back from a snowy three-day weekend! Hunter Helps Haiti this week with a week-long fundraiser and we have the Science Fair, the SAYA show, and the Witmer Lecture. A great week at Hunter!

CLUB, TERM COUNCIL AND PUBLICATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hunter Helps Haiti Week
The term councils of grades eight through twelve are planning to hold an entire week of fundraising for the Haiti Earthquake Victims. Starting from March 1st to March 5th, a term council will be holding either a luncheon or a bake sale in front of the auditorium during Activities period.
The schedule is as follows for the week of March 1st-March 5th
Mon: 2013 Luncheon
Tue: 2012 Bake Sale
Wed: 2010 Luncheon
Thu: 2011 Luncheon
Fri: 2014 Bake Sale and Tropical Juice Sale
The price per plate will be $5 for all the luncheons. The bake sales will have a different system of pricing. All proceeds will go directly towards helping the earthquake victims in Haiti.

SAYA Show
The SAYA (South Asian Youth Alliance) cultural show will take place this Wednesday, March 3rd! Performances will take place during 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th periods.

Students for Environmental Action (SEA)

For the next few weeks, if you bring lunch, please bring in a waste-free lunch. A waste-free lunch simply means that the lunch is packed in a reusable bag or lunchbox, that the food is packed as much as possible in reusable containers instead of disposable ones, and that food in individual packages is avoided as much as possible. We are trying to see how much Hunter can reduce its cafeteria waste during this period. For more information, go to www.wastefreelunches.org.

Hunter Science Fair
The Hunter Science Fair for grades 9-12 is Monday March 1. Participating students should bring their entry forms and set up displays by 7:45 am. The displays will be available for viewing until 2:45 pm. Later this spring, an additional science research fair for grades 7-12 will be held on June 2.

Witmer Lecture
The Social Studies Department is hosting the annual Witmer Lecture on March 4th. Dr. Anne Harrington, Chair and Professor in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University, will speak. The topic is Knowing the Mind Through the Brain: An Introduction to the History of Science. 10:30—11:15 in the Auditorium. Juniors and Seniors will attend 4th period and all faculty and staff are invited. Dr. Harrington is an alumna of HCHS.

ATHLETICS

Hunter Varsity Girls Lacrosse (and Middle School)
Open spots for the team and is not necessarily based on skill. Parentals, medicals are needed along with equipment (lacrosse stick, mouthguard, goggles). Talk to Ms. Bowler, who is coaching or find Jean/Cynthia in Grade 10. Practice/tryouts begin Monday March 1 at 3:30, meeting in front of the Gym. If you are a 7th or 8th grader and are interested, don't be sad that we are now PSAL varsity, Mr. Potter, our athletic director wants to have a middle school team. Chef Bill Telepan’s “Wellness Cafe” Day scheduled for March 3
On Wednesday, March 3, Chef Bill Telepan will present another "Wellness Cafe" day at Hunter. On the menu:
· Barbecue Chicken
· Cole Slaw
· Oven Roasted Potatoes
· Hummus and Vegetable Wraps and Cheese Sandwiches are also available
This menu will be added to the regular cafeteria lunch rotation, recreated weekly by our French Culinary Institute graduates. This new lunch menu will join Chef Telepan’s Vegetarian Chili and Pasta Pesto that are already available each week.
It is the standard lunch rate of $1.50 for students. Administration and faculty are welcome to purchase lunch in the cafeteria at the faculty rate.

Tuesday Feb. 9th at 4:00 in the Hunter gym
Howdy yall! On Feb. 9th the girls varsity basketball team has a game against its rival Stuyvesant high school! Come out and support the Hawks in this crucial matchup. However, before the game, certain members of sports teams will be raising money for cancer. (i.e. the basketball team has received pledges from people that will donate a certain amount of money to cancer for each foul shot that person makes out of 100). You can take part too! Get some pledges, shoot some freethrows and help battle cancer and have a great time doing it. During the game, the Athletic Association will be selling concessions for your convenience. This is also one of the last home games of the season so make sure you don't miss it!

Tapestry

Ice Skating
2012 Term Council has planned an ice skating trip for the February 9th half day. Meet at Lasker Rink (at the top of Central Park) from 1-3. $8 flat admission rate with $5.50 rentals at rink. Hand in $8 and permission slips to Ms. Fogelman (305) or term officers by February 2nd. All grades welcome.

The Hunter General Store has been restocked! Stop by to pick up official Hunter sweatshirts, long-sleeved shirts and sweatpants. Sweatshirts are $25, sweatpants are $20 and shirts are $15. Merchandise is sold in the G.O. office on the 2nd floor outside of the auditorium.

Chinese New Year Fiesta
The Chinese American Parents' Association will host a Chinese New Year Fiesta on Sunday, February 21 at East Buffet and Restaurant in Flushing, Queens from 5-9 p.m. All Hunter parents and students are invited to network together in celebration of the Chinese new year. Latest CASINO ROYALE Auction News
Donations are coming in and the auction chairs are thrilled! Thanks to all who have donated so far--it is truly shaping up to be a terrific event! Now, we're wondering if anyone out there could help with the printing of the auction catalog? Please let us know! Contact us at: auction@HunterPTA.org. If you'd like to talk to us in person about the auction, please stop by our "Game Table" before the PTA meeting on February 10th in the auditorium lobby. We'll be holding a "Casino Royale" raffle and you can pick up donation forms and some other goodies, too. SEE you there, so we can RAISE some cash for Hunter. Remember to HOLD the date: Saturday, May 15th for the actual party!
