September 21st-28th

Welcome to our first issue of the 2009 - 2010 school year! Hunter Online Weekly is a weekly newsletter containing the coming week's activities, events, and other important information. HOW is available online by clicking on “Hunter Online Weekly” under the Quick Links section of the HCHS website. If you'd like to submit an announcement to HOW, please see the bottom of this email. In this week's issue there is information on the many clubs that are getting underway, a special opportunity to take a Chinese language course, and more! Please contact the relevant club leaders/faculty/organizers for more information.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

Anime Club (ANI)
First meeting this week, drop by! :D

The Anime Club is to both introduce people to anime (Japanese animation, much like cartoons) and for people who like anime to have a place to discuss, do anime-related activities, watch anime, etc. Some activities planned are contests (ramen-eating contests, cosplay [character dress-up] contests, music video contests), discussion and debates of different anime, brief viewings of different anime, how to animate and draw anime, and much more.

Bike To Spirit Day
Training Ride
Tuesday, September 22 at 1:00. (it’s a half day) location:
Engineers Gate (entrance to central park at 90th street and 5th Ave)
This is a training ride for those interested in biking to Spirit Day on October 15th. The ride to spirit day is about 50miles so we will be doing a lap (6mi) or two of the park drive at 17mph. This is to see who is prepared for such a long ride. Helmets and road bikes are required. Other training rides will take place. Open to all grades.

Hunter Theater's Musical, CABARET, is looking to fill these positions:

Are you upgrading or downsizing your stereo system?
Our electronic equipment is aging!
We were hoping for donations of any stereo equipment (recievers, CD players, speakers) that might still be usable. Sometimes when you upgrade a system there might still be useful components.
All contributions welcome.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES

After School Chinese Language Program
The After School Chinese Language Program is back for its 3rd year!
It is a partnership between the PTA and Hunter College. The teachers will be sent by Dr. Der-lin Chao, director of Chinese Division of the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies. This program is “extracurricular” and is from October to May. Students of all levels are welcome.
In order to best suit your needs, we are conducting a survey before this year’s program starts. Last year, there were two classes (beginner and intermediate). The classes were during the 9th periods on Mondays and Tuesdays. The fee for each student was $100 per year.

Healthy Hunter Committee
In conjunction with the Elementary School, the Healthy Hunter Committee will explore ways to improve student life pertaining to wellness, food offerings and environmentalism. Students are encouraged to get involved and are invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday, September 23 at 8:30 a.m. in the Hunter Cafeteria. Partners from "Wellness in the Schools" will attend to help set goals and a plan of action for improved cafeteria cuisine. The committee will explore recycling, gardening and fitness at future meetings. For more information, contact elementary school parent coordinator Carol Blancho at msmodoc@gmail.com.

Korean traditional food and a variety of cultural festivities are planned. Please take lots of interest in it and buy the tickets early!

Reminder - there is no school for students on Monday, September 28th (religious holiday) and Tuesday, September 29th (professional development day).
