CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
Argus
Argus wants submissions of poetry, prose, essays, stories, and miscellany from 9-12 graders! Argus meets each Friday during 5th period in Room 318 to review a piece for inclusion in the magazine, published at the end of the year. Pieces are read anonymously and the author does not need to be present, although everyone is always welcome. E-mail your writing to hchsargus@gmail.com or give it to Kirsten Collins/Eliot Thompson (Editors-in-Chief) (or their college folders).
Hunter High School AIDS Walk Team 2010
We are looking for volunteers to walk in the 2010 AIDS Walk on May 17 to raise money for AIDS research, or people who are willing to volunteer to cheer people on along the sidelines or hand out food at rest stations. Service credit will be awarded for the number of volunteer hours.
The AIDS walk is approximately 6.2 miles long and takes an average of 2 - 3 hours. The walk goes through the park and around the city. There are food, drink, and rest stops along the way and people cheering you on the entire time. Walkers ask friends and family to sponsor them and donate either a certain amount of money per mile walked or a lump sum. When walkers are registered, they are assigned a webpage, which will be the link to give people who want to donate. Writing a letter or making phone calls to everyone you can is recommended to try to get donations. Donations can also be brought in check or cash form to the walk, or mailed in to the organization after the walk date.

AKIN (African Kids In Need)
National AIDS Day is just around the corner! Come learn more about the world you live in, by seeing a slideshow and hearing a first-hand experience of the AIDS epidemic and clinics in Africa. (Brought to you by AKIN). AIDS is a serious problem and it affects everyone, everywhere: From Nimibia and Botswana to right here in New York, so educate yourself!
Our guest speaker (who lived in Africa for a year, helping the AIDS clinics), will be presenting a slideshow of pictures from her experience, tons of info about the issue and it's long and short term affects on children, their parents and their ability to succeed in a better future.
This will take place Tuesday, December 1st during Activites and 5th (11:18- 12:34)

We will discuss story making and scripting on the first day, storyboarding, planing and sketching on the second day, and inking and toning on the third day. There will be winter treats. The One Soul: When Humanity Fails Holocaust Education Exhibit seeks to inspire and educate viewers about the Holocaust and about how intellectual and emotional responses to the Holocaust can be channeled into constructive action and awareness. This exhibition tells of the unspeakable crimes against humanity during World War II and the soldiers who liberated Western Europe and freed the survivors of Nazi persecution. One Soul Initiative seeks to analyze the historic events of the Holocaust in a way that allows us to consider contemporary lessons and encourages an attitude towards humanity that can counter the horrors of the Holocaust. One Soul seeks to fill the growing schism that is arising between the dying generation of survivors and the new generation of youth that is struggling to comprehend the depths of evil that abounded in the Holocaust. The Holocaust provides multifaceted lessons and inspiration for social action and deeper awareness of the value of the individual within the community.

The I-HELP Liberia Club is organizing a benefit concert featuring Emmy- winning Michal Towber (Mr. Towber's daughter!), Arthur Lewis, and Malini Sur, all Hunter alums who are accomplished musicians.
The concert is at 6PM, Saturday Nov. 28th (the Saturday after Thanksgiving) in the Hunter Auditorium. The Hunter Korean Drumming Troop will commence the evening.

Healthy Lunch on November 18 for Students and Faculty
Chef Bill Telepan returns to the Hunter cafeteria to cook freshly-prepared vegetarian pasta with pesto sauce on Wednesday, November 18. The vegetarian chili he served last month was a big success, so it is on the menu in regular rotation, prepared with the help of Telepan-trained cooking school interns in our cafeteria, throughout November. Student lunches are $1.50. Parent volunteers who would like to help that day, please contact Carol Blanco, Healthy Hunter Committee, at MsModoc@gmail.com.

The concert is at 6PM, Saturday Nov. 28th (the Saturday after Thanksgiving) in the Hunter Auditorium. The Hunter Korean Drumming Troop will commence the evening.

Panel Discussion at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College
November 11th from 4-8pm
On the occasion of Performa 09, which this year marks the 100th anniversary of the launch of Futurism, the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, the Hunter College Department of Art, and Performa present “Shock and Awe: The Troubling Legacy of the Futurist Cult of War,” an interdisciplinary symposium organized by Emily Braun, Distinguished Professor, Hunter College. This symposium addresses the uneasy, if powerful, alliance of art and politics. Experts from across the humanities and social sciences ask the questions: how and why was modernism used to legitimize and celebrate modern warfare, especially dominance from the air. This symposium is a must for those interested in the use and aesthetics and visual representation in the shaping of public opinion.

Dr. Patsy Cooper, a faculty member in the Department of Teaching and Learning at New York University, will examine the skills parents can use to guide their teenagers through the non-academic aspects of a highly pressured high school environment.
Also, Dr. Eileen Coppola will review the school's Mission Statement emanating from the Middle States accreditation process, and faculty members will be on hand to answer questions about this statement of Hunter's core beliefs.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
Hunter Backpack Organization (HBO)
HBO supports the project Operation Backpack, founded by the non-profit organization Volunteers of America. Our goal is to donate 100 filled high-school backpacks to Operation Backpack to be distributed to homeless children for the 2010-2011 school year.
On Tuesday November 3rd, Paige Davis, the host of the show Trading Spaces on TLC and former star of the Broadway production of Chicago, will be coming to Hunter to speak at the 7th-8th grade assembly about Operation Backpack as an opportunity for community outreach.

Dr. Chris Bleecker, Chairperson - Counseling Department, is hosting a panel of college admissions officers to discuss the college admissions process. You will hear from representatives from Dartmouth, Duke, Swarthmore and the University of Richmond. The presentation, which will surely be informative and interesting will begin PROMPTLY at 6:30 p.m. Please plan to arrive earlier to get settled.

Virtual NAGC Convention at Hunter

The PTA is pleased to host a "virtual convention," featuring live sessions from the 2009 National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) Convention held this year in St. Louis, Missouri. Please join us in a Hunter classroom with Smartboard technology on Saturday, November 7 from 8:30 am - 5:45 pm.
Parents and faculty are welcome to drop by at any time throughout the day to view and listen to lectures given by the nation's top educators on gifted education. You will gain insight on the latest topics and learn how the experts are implementing programs across the nation. Featured speaker Howard Gardner, Professor of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will kick-off and close the lecture series.

As a way of sharing the HOW newsletter with students, we will be using student email addresses in the online Parent Directory as another method of distribution. PARENTS - please log in (www.hunterpta.org, click on Parent Directory)and update your child's email ID. You may "hide" it from public view if you wish. In the near future, we will send a welcome message to students with login details so they, too, can use the online Parent Directory to search for fellow schoolmates. Students will have search capabilities only, not editing functions.
HUNTER ENTRANCE EXAM ANNOUNCEMENT FROM MR. COLLINS
We want to alert you to an important change to our schedule. Your HCCS calendars note Friday, January 15th, 2010 as closed for Campus School students and the date for the HCHS Entrance Exam. Due to a need to
accommodate the complicated calendars of both the Campus Schools and Hunter College the HCHS entrance exam will now be held on:

The snow date will remain the same, Friday, January 22nd, 2010. In the event of a heavy snowfall on Friday, January 8th, the Entrance Exam will be given on January 22nd and classes at the Campus Schools will be cancelled to accommodate the test.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause your family and hope that you will spread the word about this change to our calendar as you promote Hunter in your community.

On the occasion of Performa 09, which this year marks the 100th anniversary of the launch of Futurism, the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, the Hunter College Department of Art, and Performa present “Shock and Awe: The Troubling Legacy of the Futurist Cult of War,” an interdisciplinary symposium organized by Emily Braun, Distinguished Professor, Hunter College. This symposium addresses the uneasy, if powerful, alliance of art and politics. Experts from across the humanities and social sciences ask the questions: how and why was modernism used to legitimize and celebrate modern warfare, especially dominance from the air. This symposium is a must for those interested in the use and aesthetics and visual representation in the shaping of public opinion.

On the occasion of Performa 09, which this year marks the 100th anniversary of the launch of Futurism, the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, the Hunter College Department of Art, and Performa present “Shock and Awe: The Troubling Legacy of the Futurist Cult of War,” an interdisciplinary symposium organized by Emily Braun, Distinguished Professor, Hunter College. This symposium addresses the uneasy, if powerful, alliance of art and politics. Experts from across the humanities and social sciences ask the questions: how and why was modernism used to legitimize and celebrate modern warfare, especially dominance from the air. This symposium is a must for those interested in the use and aesthetics and visual representation in the shaping of public opinion.
