January 11th - 17th

This week we have announcements from Mr. Boyle in the Social Studies Department about the Geography Bee and from Ms. Krilov in the Mathematics Department about the MATHCOUNTS competition, in addition to many announcements from clubs, publications, and the PTA. A link to the midterm exam schedule is included below. School is closed next Monday in observance of the MLK Jr. holiday.

CLUB AND PUBLICATIONS ANNOUNCEMENTS

MIND Club
MIND, Hunter's one and only psychology club, will be screening"A Beautiful Mind" , an Academy Award-winning film about the brilliant mathematician John Nash and his experiences with paranoid schizophrenia. We will be showing the movie on Monday, January 11th in room 220 during Activities.

Tapestry
Tapestry, Hunter's only science fiction and fantasy magazine for grades 7-12, will be selling its magazines starting next week. Magazines will be $2 each. We are also accepting submissions (poetry, prose, and art) for our next issue! Submissions can be made by contacting huntertapestry@gmail.com and visiting Dr. Mozes at the English department.

Annals
Annals is now accepting grade candid photos to be featured in this year's yearbook. You can email photos of you and your friends that you want featured in the yearbook to annalshchs@gmail.com. Make sure to note what grade you are in and be sure that the photo only includes members of that grade. This is your chance to have your photos in the yearbook!! Don't miss out!

Argus
Argus wants submissions of poetry, prose, essays, stories, and miscellany from 9-12 graders! Argus meets each Friday during 5th period in Room 318 to review a piece for inclusion in the magazine, published at the end of the year. Pieces are read anonymously and the author does not need to be present, although everyone is always welcome. E-mail your writing to hchsargus@gmail.com or give it to Kirsten Collins/Eliot Thompson (Editors-in-Chief) (or their college folders).

Green Mission Movement
Meets Mondays during Activities in room 206.
Green Mission Movement (or Green M&M for short) is a new, environmentally- based club whose mission is to help raise awareness about the current state of our environment, and to take steps to counter the damage that has been done to it. We aim not only to be involved in local environmental projects but also to contribute to national causes. We are currently planning a fundraiser that will raise money for an organization known as Trees for the Future, that plants trees in areas that have been destroyed or damaged by natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. We are also planning a park cleanup in Central Park. Come check it out!!!

Geography Bee Competition
The Final/Championship Round of the National Geographic Society’s
National Geographic Bee at Hunter College High School will be held on
January 13th.
It will take place in Room 220 at 3:00 PM. The finalists, moving up
from the Preliminary Competition Round, held on January 6th, are:

FROM THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

MATHCOUNTS
The 8th grade Math Team will be taking the MATHCOUNTS School Competition to determine who will compete on Hunter's team at the Chapter and, hopefully, the State competitions. The Chapter competition will be held on Saturday, February 6 at Columbia and the State competition will be held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, March 13.
The School competition will take place over the next two weeks.
Part 1: Sprint Round, Thursday January 14 Period 4 Room 408 (30 questions, 40 minutes, NO calculators)
Part 2: Target Round, Thursday January 21 Period 4 Room 408 (4 sets of 2 questions, 6 minutes per set, calculators allowed)

Members of the 7th grade Math Team are welcome to take the MATHCOUNTS School Competition along with the 8th graders.

January PTA Meeting
There has been a slight change to our meeting program on Wednesday, January 20 at 7pm. After the presentation by Rebecca Wallace-Segall from Writopia Lab on "How to Inspire Kids to Write," we will hear from Principal Eileen Coppola who will present and discuss the HCCS goals developed by each of the Middle States committees. Razel Solow, Ph.D., Director, Center for Gifted Studies and Education at Hunter College, will present "What Parents Should Know About Differentiation" at next month's PTA meeting on February 10.
Refreshments will be served at 6:30pm. The meeting will begin promptly at 7pm. No food or drink in the auditorium. The Queens bus will leave at 9:10pm, making the standard 12 stops.

Graphic Designer--to design and create a look we can transfer to the webpage, use for the invitations and on the cover of the auction catalog
Raffles Committee Chairperson--to oversee and coordinate raffles held before and during the auction
Printer--to donate printing of the auction invitations and/or the catalog
